Understanding Red Flags - Through My Experience, Cellulitis

Have you ever heard the term "red flags?" When working with homeopathy or other alternative medicine, it's essential to be aware of these warning symptoms.

Red flags are signs that something may be seriously wrong and if left untreated, can lead to more dangerous health problems.

In this blog, I will explain why recognising these signs is so important, using a resent caase e of cellulitis I experienced myself as an example.

A red flag waves on a lifeguard tower at the beach, signaling hazardous swimming conditions as a lifeguard stands by with a quad bike.

#1 - What is Red Flags?

Red flags are symptoms that should not be ignored because they may indicate a potentially serious problem. In some cases, they can signal an existing serious illness, In others, they may point to a risk of one developing.

These symptoms can be physical or psychological.

#2 - Why it is important to understand red flags?

When using homeopathic remedies for self-care at home, it is important to be aware of these red flags so that you don't miss the opportunity to see a medical doctor promptly.

If you fail to make the right judgement and leave a problem untreated, it can reinforce the public misunderstanding that homeopathy itself is dangerous.

Homeopathy is not inherently dangerous. What truly matters is being well-versed in how to asseses a situation and make appropriate decisions - both as homeopaths and when using homeopathy for self-care.

Even if you are using homeopathy at home, we recommend that you consult a medical doctor immediately if you suspect something is wrong.

I am not completely against conventional medicine. In fact, conventional medicine highly effective in emergency care. In life-threatening situations, we should take full advantage of the benefits that conventional medicine can offer.

#3 - Some examples of Red Flags

Here are a few examples of situations when you should seek medical help:

  1. High fever lasting more than 24 hours – A fever is a sign that your body is working hard to fight off harmful bacteria or viruses. However if it continues for a long time, it can affect the brain and other organs. If a high fever persists, especially in children, see a doctor immediately.

  2. High fever, headache and difficulty bending the neck or a stiff neck for no clear reason – This could be meningitis. See a doctor straightaway.

  3. Rapidly spreading rash, swelling of the lips, tightness in the throat, or difficulty breathing – These may be signs of a severe allergic reaction such as anaphylactic shock. Seek medical attention immediately.

  4. Infections that spread quickly – Get checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

  5. Blood in your stool or urine – This could be a sign of a problem with internal organ. See a doctor immediately.

  6. Swelling that does not go down – If swelling does not go down after an injury, even if the pain isn't severe, it could mean a bone frature or an infection. See a doctor first

  7. Strong thoughts of wanting to end your life - It is important to seek professional help right away.

These are just a few examples. There are many other serious symptoms. If you think something is wrong, see a doctor promptly to have your condition checked.

#4 - Why is Cellulitis Red Flags?

This time my symptoms began with an injury to my arm. I was told that I had inflammation in the muscles or ligaments due to excessive strain from constantly carrying heavy loads and was advised to rest the arm. However, one day a rash appeared. The next day, my arm was bright red and swollen from the elbow down and it looked like it might burst.

I tried taking remedies, but the area was spreading so quickly and it was so itchy that I immediately went to the walk-in centre. At first, I was told it was contact dermatitis and sent home, but later it was diagnosed as cellulitis and I started taking antibiotics.

Cellulitis is an infection that occurs under the skin. If the infection spreads and enters the blood stream, it can lead to sepsis and potentially fatal symptoms, so it is important to treat it as soon as possible.

In my case, it is unclear whether the injury was the cause. Cellulitis can develop from small scratches on the skin, and although rare, it can also occur after acupuncture. In my case, was it caused by acupuncture? Was it the injury? Did I have a small wound on my skin that became infected? Did I have insect bites during moving? The cause remains unknown.

While I was taking antibiotics, I also took homeopathic remedies, supplements like Vitamin C, Zinc and probiotics, and herbal tinctures like echinacea (all of which were confirmed to have no interactions with the antibiotics).

#4 - Homeopathic remedies used of my cellulitis

While I was on antibiotics, I added the following remedies as my symptoms evolved:

  • Apis, Hitaminum, Urtica urens, Rhus tox for itching and rash

  • Hypericum for pain

  • Belladonna for red, hot swelling

  • Hepa sulph, Gunpowder, Pyrogen and Narayani War MIx 35 for infection

  • Arnica for bruising pain

I used potencies between 30c and 1M, most often 200c.

#4 - Conclusion

When using homeopathic remedies for self-care at home, it is important to be aware of these red flags so that you don't miss the opportunity to see a doctor promptly.

If you are unable to make the right judgement and rely on self-care for too long, it may become too late. This is one of the reasons why the public may misunderstand homeopthy as dangerous.

Don't try to solve everything on your own, seek the advice of a professional.

There is no shame in asking others. As the Japanese proverb goes "Asking is a temporary shame, not asking is a lifetime of shame." It is also important to seek medical help at the appropriate time when necessary.

If you ever feel that something is wrong, don't hesitate. Trust your intition, visit a medical professional and seek expert advice.
