Relief vs. Healing: What Are You Really Looking For?

When dealing with health issues, are you seeking "relief" or "healing," recovery from the root cause?

In this blog, I will explain the difference between these two concepts through the lens of homeopathy.

A young woman with a towel wrapped around her head gently touches her face, highlighting several visible acne spots, while looking towards the camera against a plain background.
A young plant emerges from the rich soil, basking in the warm glow of sunlight, symbolizing new beginnings and growth.

Homeopathy is widely used around the world in a variety of situations.

It is used by individuals for self-care or for their families, serving as a kind of "home remedy kit" for minor ailments such as colds or diarrhoea.

Professional homeopaths also prescribe remedies tailored to each person's specific condition.

In a previous blog post, I explained how homeopathy is used for both acute and chronic conditions.

Here, I will further explain the difference between "relief" and "healing" through the lens of homeopathy.

#1 - What is the difference between "Relief" and "Healing"?

What does "Relief" mean?

"Relief" refers to soothing symptoms when they are present. As the term implies, it involves easing discomfort by addressing the symptoms themselves.

For instance, if you are prone to intestinal reactions triggered by foods such as dairy or wheat, avoiding these items can help calm the symptoms. Similarly, using medications or remedies to ease a runny nose or itchy eyes during hayfever season provides temporary relief.

In homeopathy, specific remedies selected based on the characteristics of the symptoms can be used to temporarily soothe the condition.

However, while this approach may successfully calm uncomfortable symptoms at the time, the symptoms can recur when you are exposed again to triggers such as dairy product, wheat or pollen.

What does "Healing" mean?

“Healing” can be understood as a process of supporting the body and mind towards greater balance and wellbeing. Rather than focusing only on easing a symptom in the moment, it considers the person as a whole, including their individual patterns, lifestyle and emotional wellbeing.

In homeopathy, a consultation takes an individualised approach, exploring the wider context of a person’s health rather than focusing on a single symptom alone.

As I discussed in a previous blog post "Gut Health and Emotional Well-being: How the Gut and Mind Are Connected" remaining in a "fight-or-flight" mode due to stress hinders the body's healing process.

Ongoing stress can affect how we feel physically and emotionally, which is why wellbeing is often best considered from a broader perspective as the body feels safe and secure in a stable state, allowing it to shift into "rest-and-repair" mode.

Rather than assuming that every recurring symptom has a single underlying cause, an individualised approach considers the wider context of a person's health and the factors that may be relevant to their wellbeing.

For example, if symptoms tend to appear around certain foods or during hay fever season, it may be useful to look at the wider pattern rather than focusing only on the symptom itself.

#2 - Are you looking for relief or healing?

Do you clearly distinguish between "Relief" and "Healing"?

Lately, a great deal of information has been circulating about how to use homeopathy. Many of my blog posts focus on general information and self-care approaches for specific symptoms. They are intended to provide educational information rather than personalised treatment.

If your symptoms recur even after trying remedies by yourserlf, it suggests that you are merely cycling through a state of "Relief."

"Healing" refers to recovery achieved by looking beyond the immediate symptom. When symptoms continue to recur, it can be helpful to look beyond the symptom itself and consider the wider picture of your health.

For someone who experiences symptoms every hay fever season, a consultation during the off-season can provide an opportunity to look at their individual health patterns beyond the immediate symptoms.

A homeopath may explore factors such as overall wellbeing, lifestyle and stress as part of an individualised consultation.

Relief is valuable. But sometimes you may want to look at the bigger picture.

#3 - Final thoughts...

Which are you seeking ? "Relief" or "Healing?"

Relief and healing represent different ways of thinking about symptoms and wellbeing.

As outlined above, relief differs from healing. I hope you now understand the distinctions between the appropriate use of homeopathic remedies and the different approaches taken towards symptoms.

If you have been managing recurring symptoms with self-care but feel that you need a different approach, you may find this article helpful.

If you have been experiencing recurring or long-standing symptoms and would like to explore your health from a broader, more individualised perspective, a consultation may be worth considering.

During a consultation, I take time to understand your individual health patterns, lifestyle and emotional wellbeing, and explore how homeopathy may fit into your personal approach to wellbeing.

If you would like guidance tailored to your individual needs, you can book a consultation below.

All the best for your healing journey!
