Bloating is the sensation of fullness, tightness, or swelling in the abdomen, often accompanied by gas and discomfort. Bloating can occur due to the accumulation of gas or disruptions in the digestive system.
In this blog, we will talk about bloating and homeopathy.

#1 - Why do we get bloated?
There are many reasons…
Here are some examples below
⚠️Lack of exercise
⚠️Dehydration
⚠️Excess salt intake
⚠️Lack of fibre in the diet
⚠️Eating fried and spicy food
⚠️Carbonate drinks
⚠️Eating too fast
⚠️Dairy products
⚠️Overeating
⚠️Stress
⚠️Hormones
Bloating is the feeling of fullness, tightness, or swelling in the abdomen, often accompanied by gas and discomfort. There are several reasons why bloating occurs, typically due to the buildup of gas or disturbances in the digestive system. Here are some common causes:
1. Gas Accumulation
Swallowed Air: Eating or drinking too quickly, chewing gum, or drinking carbonated beverages can cause you to swallow excess air, which gets trapped in the digestive system.
Digestive Gases: When bacteria in the gut break down certain undigested foods, like fibre, carbohydrates, or sugars, they produce gas as a byproduct. This can cause bloating and flatulence.
2. Food Sensitivities or Intolerances
Lactose Intolerance: People who are lactose intolerant lack the enzyme lactase, which is needed to digest lactose (a sugar found in dairy). This can lead to gas, bloating, and diarrhoea.
Gluten Sensitivity: Those with gluten intolerance or celiac disease can experience bloating when consuming foods with gluten.
FODMAPs: Some people are sensitive to certain carbohydrates called FODMAPs (found in beans, onions, garlic, and certain fruits), which can ferment in the intestines and cause bloating.
3. Constipation
When stools build up in the colon, they can cause a sensation of fullness and bloating. This is often due to dehydration, low fibre intake, or lack of physical activity.
4. Overeating
Eating large meals, especially rich in fatty or highly processed foods, can slow digestion and lead to bloating. Fatty foods take longer to digest, and overeating can stretch the stomach, contributing to the feeling of fullness.
5. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
IBS is a common condition that affects the large intestine and can lead to bloating, along with symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhoea, or constipation. The exact cause of IBS is unclear, but it involves an increased sensitivity of the gut.
6. Hormonal Changes
Many women experience bloating during their menstrual cycle due to hormonal fluctuations, particularly an increase in progesterone. This hormone can slow digestion and cause water retention.
7. Gut Microbiome Imbalance
A disruption in the balance of good and bad bacteria in the gut (dysbiosis) can lead to increased gas production and bloating. This can result from antibiotics, diet, or other health conditions.
8. Fluid Retention
Conditions like liver or kidney disease, heart failure, or premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can cause the body to retain water, leading to a bloated appearance in the abdomen.
9. Stress and Anxiety
Emotional stress can affect digestion by slowing it down or speeding it up, leading to bloating and digestive discomfort. The brain-gut connection plays a role in how emotions can directly impact the gastrointestinal system.
It’s not just about food. It’s also about your lifestyle, stress levels, and emotional state.
#2 - Prevention and relief
Eat Slowly: Avoid gulping down food to reduce swallowed air.
Limit Carbonated Beverages: These can increase the amount of gas in the digestive system.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking water helps digestion and prevents constipation.
Eat Fiber-Rich Foods: This promotes regular bowel movements but introduce fiber slowly to avoid excessive gas production.
Exercise Regularly: Physical activity can help move gas through the digestive tract and prevent constipation.
Identify Trigger Foods: Keeping a food diary may help identify foods that cause bloating.
Manage Stress: Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help reduce stress-induced bloating.
If bloating is persistent, painful, or accompanied by other symptoms like weight loss or blood in the stool, it may indicate a more serious underlying condition and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
#3 - Commonly used remedies for bloating
Many people try to self-prescribe homeopathic remedies for bloating. And while that’s possible for acute symptoms, chronic or recurring bloating often points to an underlying imbalance that needs individualised care.
Here are some commonly used remedies for temporary relief.
Carbo Veg
Bloated upper abdomen, worse at night, better from burping or passing gas.
China off.
Bloated, distended feeling not relieved by gas. Worse from cold, better from motion.
Lycopodium
Bloating worsens after small meals. Craves sweets. Fermentation in the gut.
Nux Vomica
Spasmodic pain, bloating with indigestion from stress, alcohol, and coffee.
Arg Nit
Loud, explosive gas, anxiety, anticipation.
Asafoetida
Hysterical bloating. No gas passes, offensive belching.
Gelsemium
Gnawing pain, abdominal rumbling, soreness.
Raphanus Sativa
A feeling of trapped gas, particularly in the upper left part of the abdomen. No downward gas release.
Keep in mind: These are acute remedies. Chronic, recurrent bloating may require a full consultation to address underlying causes.
#4 - Helpful Natural Products (Available in the UK)
These items are available in UK health shops and pharmacies and are helpful products to know about.
Optibac One Week Flat
Beneficial bacteria ideal for individuals experiencing bloating
An easily digestible probiotic supplement designed to support the existing gut flora.
Yarrow Complex Oral Drops (A.Vogel)
Bitter herbs encourage the body to naturally correct the production of digestive enzymes. This tincture helps with bloating, flatulence or pain in the gut.
Digestisan Oral Drops (A.Vogel)
This product is good for abdominal fullness, belching and flatulence.
Silicolgel
Silicolgel creates a protective and calming layer on the stomach and intestinal lining. Due to the adsorptive and binding qualities of colloidal silicic acid, it physically attracts and adsorbs irritants, toxins and pathogens.
In my previous blog, ``Causes of Disease,'' I write about the relationship between symptoms and emotions.
If you have tried these remedies and still experience recurring constipation, it is recommended that you consult a homeopath.
#5 - When to Seek Deeper Support
If you’ve tried remedies and diet changes but still feel stuck, it might be time to ask:
Why do I eat so fast or crave certain foods?
How is my stress affecting my digestion?
Are there hormonal shifts involved?
What role do emotions or past traumas play?
In homeopathy, we don’t just treat symptoms. We look at you as a whole person—body, mind, and emotions.
Chronic bloating could be a sign of deeper issues like IBS, gut dysbiosis, or emotional patterns that affect your digestive system.
When to See a Doctor
If your bloating is:
Severe and persistent
Accompanied by weight loss or blood in stool
Paired with chronic constipation or fatigue
Please consult your GP to rule out conditions such as Crohn’s disease or colon cancer.
