Are there any options other than medications when someone has chicken pox?

Chicken pox is generally considered a naturally resolving infection, but there is a wide range of care methods available.

In addition to Conventional medicine approaches, more people are becoming interested in complementary approaches such as homeopathy.

#1 - What is chicken pox?

Chicken pox (Varicella) is a disease caused by a highly contagious virus called Varicella Zoster Virus and is commonly seen in children. The incubation period is said to be 14-16 days, and it is characterised by fever, and an itchy rash. The rash is highly contagious until it scabs over, it can leave scars, so care should be taken to avoid scratching.

#2 - About chicken pox

  • Highly contagious

The disease is highly contagious from the time the rash appears until the blisters turn into the scabs.

Even people who have never had chicken pox are at risk of infection, so it's best to avoid contact with others until the rash scans over.

Avoid sharing bath towels etc.

Furthermore, even people who have had chicken pox before, those with weakened immune systems or the elderly who tend to have weaker immune systems, are at risk of developing shingles, so it's wise to avoid contact with infectious individuals.

#3 - Natural approaches to chicken pox

  • Foods to avoid during chicken pox

The amino acids L-Arginine, found in seeds, nuts, chocolate, legumes, and whole grains, is said to help the virus multiply and may prolong symptoms. Avoid foods contain L-Arginine until symptoms subside.

In addition, try to incorporate foods rich in Vitamin C to boost immunity.

For adult, L-Lysine supplements, which are said to inhibit the multiplication of this virus, may be beneficial.

  • Be careful not to scratch and leave scars

It's natural to want to scratch when it itches, but scratching can leave the scars. For children, it's a good idea to have them wear gloves or cover the affected area with clothing.

  • If you use cream

In the UK, it is common practice to avoid touching the affected, blistered area to prevent scarring and limit the spread of this highly contagious infection, although cooling creams or gels may also be applied.

When I worked in a pharmacy in Japan, zinc-based creams were commonly used for runny skin conditions. In more natural approaches, Calendula cream is often chosen for its soothing effect, Calendula/Urtica urens cream for itching, and Melissa (Lemon Balm) cream for its antiviral properties. These can usually be found in health food stores or homeopathic pharmacies.

When using a cream, store it in the refrigerator, as the cooling effect can help relieve itching if your skin responds well to cold.

Apply the cream gently by dabbing it on lightly rather than pressing hard, to reduce the risk of scarring.

  • Oat bath

In Western countries, it has long been customary to wrap oats in gauze or muslin and either swish the bag through the bathwater or place it directly into the tub. This method is used to soothe the skin, particularly during chickenpox.

#4 - Common homeopathic remedies for chicken pox

The following are examples of homeopathic remedies commonly used for chicken pox.

Individual results may vary, if you do not see any improvements after using these remedies, please consult a homeopath.

Rhus Tox

This remedy is commonly used for chickenpox, particularly when there are intensely itchy blisters, restlessness and a high fever.

Antimonium Tart

This is another common remedy for chicken pox. It is used when there are rashes accompanied by respiratory symptoms, such as cough and bronchitis.

Apis

The skin feels burning, stinging, and swollen, and is very sensitive to touch. The rash and blisters are particularly itchy.

Antimonium Crud

Easily irritated and prone to tears. Dislikes being touched or washed and is very sensitive to pain when touched or bumped.

Sulpher

Rash and fever with thirst and hunger, but refusal to eat. This remedy may help speed recovery as symptoms near their end.

These are also useful remedies.

Pulsatilla

Rash and high fever, clingy and distressed when alone, with no thirst but a strong desire for fresh air.

Aconite

Sudden onset of fever with early symptoms; restless and thirsty.

Belladonna

Sudden onset of high fever with right-sided symptoms; thirsty but unwilling to drink water.

Because chicken pox is highly contagious, if you feel something is wrong, please consult a doctor as soon as possible.

#5 - Conclusion

In the past, it was common for children who hadn't had chicken pox to willingly come into contact with someone who had it, so that they could get the disease while they are children and naturally develop immunity. However the situation seems to have changed now.
